Strong Interest in XRP: Million-Dollar Purchase Announced

xrp

Tokyo-based game developer and publisher Gumi has taken a strategic step into digital assets to expand its balance sheet. The company announced plans to purchase approximately $17 million (2.5 billion yen) worth of XRP between September 2025 and February 2026. With this move, Gumi adds XRP as its second major crypto asset after Bitcoin.

Dual-Asset Strategy: Bitcoin + XRP

Following a $6.6 million Bitcoin purchase earlier in 2025, Gumi’s board decided to shift focus to XRP. The company plans to use Bitcoin for value and stability, and XRP for financial utility and its role in payment networks.

“XRP is a core part of the international remittance and liquidity network strategy led by SBI Holdings. As SBI is our largest shareholder, XRP carries high strategic alignment for our company.” – Gumi Management

SBI and Ripple Relationship

SBI Holdings, Gumi’s largest shareholder, has a long-standing partnership with Ripple. Their joint venture, SBI Ripple Asia, aims to develop blockchain-based payment infrastructure across Japan and Asia.

Earlier this month, Ripple and SBI announced plans to launch the RLUSD stablecoin for enterprises in Japan by early 2026.

Gumi’s Strategic Rationale

Gumi views its XRP investment not just as a financial asset but as part of a long-term business development strategy:

  • XRP’s role in cross-border payments and liquidity aligns with the company’s growth plans.
  • Crypto assets will be revalued quarterly based on market value, with gains/losses reflected in the income statement.
  • The company aims to leverage XRP to increase revenue opportunities in blockchain-based financial infrastructure.

Gumi has adopted a dual-asset strategy focused on Bitcoin and XRP to expand its digital asset portfolio. Supported by SBI, this decision aims to strengthen Gumi’s position not only in the gaming sector but also in Web3 and blockchain-based financial infrastructure.
