Decentralized perpetual contract protocol Aster (ASTER) continued its rapid growth on September 28, reaching nearly 90% DEX market share with $47 billion in 24-hour trading volume. Competitors like Hyperliquid, Superp, and Drift Protocol were left behind.
This surge not only impacts the DEX market but also poses a serious challenge to Binance’s perpetual contracts business. Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) stated on social media: “Aster competes with Binance, but this is good for BNB.”

Rapid Growth and User Compensation
Aster set new records by hitting $104 billion total DEX volume on Friday. DefiLlama data shows that on the same day, Aster recorded $46 billion in trading, outperforming competitors Lighter and Hyperliquid.
Earlier this week, the platform fully reimbursed users affected by a Plasma (XPL) perpetual contract glitch. CEO Abhishek Pawa noted the issue stemmed from a misconfigured 1-dollar pegged index. Aster acted quickly, compensating all losses and covering trading and liquidation fees.
This step strengthened investor confidence and highlighted the importance of user-focused practices in the crypto market.
CZ’s Role and BNB Impact
CZ confirmed that former Binance employees are part of Aster’s team and that YZi Labs holds a minority stake in the protocol. However, he emphasized that he is not part of the core team, serving only as a technology consultant.
CZ explained:
“I only advise on products and technology. Regulatory matters are not my domain. Operational decisions belong entirely to the Aster team.”
This setup enhances Aster’s experienced team perception while potentially benefiting the BNB ecosystem. Increased on-chain activity, fee burning, and DeFi integrations could positively affect BNB’s value proposition.
Not on the team, just an advisor.
