Changpeng Zhao (CZ) Attitude and Thoughts on Time Management
Time management is a skill and strategy that aims to help individuals effectively manage their work, tasks, projects, and daily lives. Proper time management can lead to increased productivity, reduced stress, and the achievement of personal and professional goals.
So, what are Changpeng Zhao’s (CZ), the founder of Binance, thoughts on time management?
In response to the question, “How do you find the time to read so many books?” he explains his approach and perspective on time management as follows:
CZ believes that effective time management primarily involves the ability to say “no.” What you choose not to do can be more critical than what you choose to do.
He avoids introductory and exploratory meetings, which he finds time-consuming and generally inefficient. If he believes a meeting is not necessary, he declines without hesitation. He often shares articles or information instead, as it’s a more time-efficient way to convey information.
CZ keeps most of his meetings short, even in-person ones, usually limited to 15 minutes or less. He is upfront about the limited time, and he only attends meetings where his presence is essential. CZ prefers concise and to-the-point discussions, aiming for a summary he can read in 30 seconds. He is results-oriented and does not engage in aimless or unproductive conversations.
He proactively asks, “What’s the desired action?” in both online and real-life interactions. If there’s no action needed, he promptly ends or disregards the conversation. CZ does not engage in casual socializing or chit-chat.
Changpeng Zhao (CZ) is selective about his network and disengages from groups or individuals with whom he no longer needs to interact, both professionally and personally. This approach helps him reduce distractions and notifications.
He avoids extensive socialization and prefers to maintain a small network of close contacts. He relies on well-connected individuals to help him connect with others when necessary, reducing his need to be at the center of a vast network.
CZ opts for online shopping to save time, often buying items in bulk, such as clothing. He relies on search results and AI recommendations, eliminating the need for extensive decision-making.
He does not cook and instead prefers to order quickly from menus, spending no more than 10 seconds making a choice. CZ prioritizes fast food over fine dining, emphasizing efficiency over culinary experience.
CZ does not invest time in organizing his room, desk, or suitcase; chaos is his norm. He doesn’t follow the news unless someone shares a link with him, and even then, he takes only a brief 10-second glance.
He avoids watching sports, except when there is a sponsorship tie-in, such as with CR7 during the World Cup or Argentina’s matches. Even then, he limits his viewing.
CZ does not watch TV and finds most movies boring. He is no longer interested in extensive entertainment.
He does not engage with TikTok or video streams, with the exception of a few Instagram accounts related to osteopathy, chiropractic care, and exercise to manage his back pain.
Changpeng Zhao (CZ) spends a significant amount of time on Twitter and writing blog posts.
He has never had a strong interest in music and dislikes loud music in public spaces, often requesting that the volume be lowered. He prefers quiet environments.
In place of traditional reading, CZ listens to books. He incorporates audiobooks into various daily activities such as showering, brushing his teeth, or during bathroom breaks. He listens to books in the car, at airports, and before bedtime, allowing him to complete approximately one book per week. CZ finds extended periods during plane travel to be ideal for either writing or listening to books. On long flights, he can read 2-3 books, and he spent 600 hours in the air last year.
He usually listens to audiobooks at 2.5x speed, which he has grown accustomed to. Most audiobooks have an average listening duration of 4 hours.
CZ selects books based on recommendations from friends and AI recommendations, which are generated based on his previous reading preferences. If he does not enjoy a book, he stops listening to it immediately. CZ doesn’t force himself to complete unengaging books. He prefers to revisit books he enjoys and occasionally buys the Kindle version for further reading.
And finally, CZ says the following about the concept of time:
Time is the most limited resource. And knowledge is the most powerful multiplier. Don’t exchange time for anything else.
