Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has hinted at the possibility of adding Dogecoin as an official payment method for Tesla cars “at some point” in the future. This revelation came during Musk’s interaction with the public at the Berlin Gigafactory on March 13, where he responded affirmatively to an audience member’s inquiry about purchasing Teslas with Dogecoin.
The market responded positively to Musk’s statement, with the price of Dogecoin experiencing a notable increase from $0.172 to $0.188 at the time of writing, marking a 9.3% surge as the news gained traction.
Elon Musk reiterated his support for Dogecoin by emphasizing its potential, stating that fans can already use DOGE to buy Tesla merchandise and expressing his belief in “Dogecoin to the moon.”
Musk’s advocacy for Dogecoin began after receiving requests from Tesla factory employees and SpaceX visitors to incorporate the memecoin as an official payment option. He sees Dogecoin as a cryptocurrency favored by the general public, contrasting it with Bitcoin, which he believes primarily garners support from wealthy individuals.
Tesla initiated acceptance of Dogecoin payments for its merchandise starting January 14, 2022, with the caveat that only Dogecoin payments would be honored, and other digital assets would not be refunded.
