Epic Games Wants to Bring Popular Games to the Metaverse!

Metaverse 6

Epic Games is exploring the creation of an interoperable metaverse by incorporating popular games like Fortnite, Minecraft, and Roblox. CEO Tim Sweeney recently discussed plans to use the Unreal Engine 6 as the foundation for this vision, aiming to create a digital ecosystem where players can engage across multiple games with shared assets and experiences.

In an interview, Sweeney highlighted the importance of games where friends can play together for long periods, leading to increased spending on digital items that hold lasting value. He emphasized that an interoperable economy would increase player trust, allowing digital goods purchased in one game to be used across different platforms, aligning with the broader concept of the metaverse.

While Epic Games’ metaverse vision is still in development, Sweeney noted that there’s a long way to go. He believes that a federated system—where players could seamlessly move between platforms like Roblox, Minecraft, and Fortnite—would enhance the gaming experience and encourage community engagement across games.

This initiative builds on Epic Games’ previous efforts, including raising $2 billion in 2022 to fund the metaverse project and supporting metaverse infrastructure developer Hadean. According to Saxs Persson, Epic’s executive VP, the goal is to create a future where the best gaming ecosystems thrive through collaboration and interoperability.
