Flappy Bird Might Launch Play To Earn Token!

Flappy Bird

The iconic mobile game Flappy Bird has returned with a new version that offers an optional Web3 integration but will not involve non-fungible tokens (NFTs). According to a spokesperson for the Flappy Bird Foundation, the game will give users the choice to engage with Web3 features when played through Telegram, specifically via The Open Network (TON) blockchain. However, those who prefer a more traditional experience can opt out of these crypto features, and the game will remain 100% free to play.

The new version, launched on September 16, follows earlier speculation about possible crypto elements, including mentions of a “$FLAP token” and a “flap-to-earn” promotional model. While crypto integrations are confirmed, the Foundation emphasized that there will be no NFTs involved, and a crypto wallet won’t be necessary to play.

Revenue for the game will be generated through in-app purchases, such as energy boosts or items that affect gameplay, and through optional in-game ads that offer players perks like score multipliers. The team behind the new Flappy Bird also revealed plans for future mobile releases that will be free of any Web3 features.

The original creator, Dong Nguyen, has distanced himself from this version, stating that he does not support the integration of crypto into the game. Nguyen famously pulled the game in 2014 due to concerns over its addictive nature. Following a trademark dispute, the Flappy Bird Foundation acquired the rights to the game earlier this year.
