Grayscale Research has updated its “Top 20” list, adding three new altcoins with promising potential: Maple (SYRUP), Geodnet (GEOD), and Story Protocol (IP). This update emphasizes real-world applications in areas like DeFi, DePIN, and IP tokenization.
Grayscale categorizes the digital asset market into five sectors: currencies, smart contract platforms, financial services, consumer & culture, and utilities & services. This segmentation helps Grayscale evaluate investment opportunities across diverse categories.
With the most recent balancing, the market now includes 227 assets and a total market value of $2.6 trillion, covering a significant portion of the global cryptocurrency market.
What is Maple Finance (SYRUP)?
Maple Finance (SYRUP) is a DeFi protocol that focuses on institutional lending. It operates on two main platforms: Maple Institutional (for accredited investors) and Syrup.fi (for DeFi users).
Over the past year, Maple Finance has achieved $600 million in Total Value Locked (TVL) and $20 million in annual network fee revenue. The project aims to integrate with other protocols like Pendle (PENDLE) to increase Syrup.fi’s TVL to $2 billion.

It also offers investors the chance to profit from IP trading through royalty earnings.
The project includes high-profile music rights from artists like Justin Bieber, BTS, Maroon 5, and Katy Perry. It plans to launch its IP-focused blockchain and token in February 2025.
Grayscale Removes 3 Altcoins from Its Investment Products
In this update, Grayscale has removed Akash Network (AKT), Arweave (AR), and Jupiter (JUP) from its Top 20 list. Grayscale acknowledges these projects’ significance but believes that the revised list offers more attractive risk-adjusted returns for the upcoming quarter.
Grayscale continues to focus on key investment themes like Ethereum scaling solutions, AI-integrated blockchain development, DeFi, and staking innovations. The continuous inclusion of assets such as Optimism (OP), Bittensor (TAO), and Lido DAO (LDO) showcases the firm’s interest in these high-growth sectors.
Grayscale has broadened its digital asset evaluation process, assessing 40 altcoins for investment in January 2025 and revealing a 35-asset list for inclusion in investment products in October.
