Nvidia Researchers Make Strides Toward Functional Quantum Computer

Nvidia, Quantum Computer

Based on supercomputer simulations run on graphics processing units (GPUs), Nvidia researchers claim significant progress toward a commercially feasible quantum computer. This development is a turning point in the continuous endeavor to build a practical quantum computer.

Quantum computers run essentially unlike traditional computers. While conventional computers do computations using binary switches, quantum computers employ qubits—based on quantum physics—to execute much more difficult calculations.

For decades, quantum computers have been developed steadily as many techniques are investigated. Currently under investigation are two most often used techniques: quantum annealing and quantum gating, each with unique qualities and possible applications.

Simulating Quantum Annealing Systems with GPUs

Leveraging its vast knowledge with GPUs in artificial intelligence and gaming, Nvidia is concentrating on building a quantum annealing system. The firm distinguishes itself in this arena with its creative usage of GPUs for quantum computing research carried out via supercomputer simulation.

In a recently published research article, Nvidia described how hundreds of thousands of GPUs spread across numerous clusters were utilized to replicate the behavior of a quantum annealing system. Usually running on supercomputers with CPU clusters, these simulations gained from Nvidia’s GPUs’ special power.

The study tackled a fundamental problem in annealing systems wherein magnetic particles used in quantum computing would suddenly exhibit different behavior. Thanks to Nvidia’s simulations, the team was able to suggest a method including magnetic field manipulation, hence maybe bringing full-service quantum annealers closer to reality.

Potential Applications of Quantum Annealing Systems

Unlike gate-based quantum computers, which are meant for broad tasks, quantum annealing systems are meant to address particular optimization issues. These tailored systems might transform sectors like quantum sensing, transportation, shipping and logistics, energy, finance, and blockchain.
