South Korea Seeks Interpol’s Help in Extradition of Do Kwon

Do Kwon

South Korea’s National Police Agency and Ministry of Justice have reportedly sought Interpol’s assistance in bringing back Terraform Labs co-founder Kwon Do-hyeong.

Newsis, a South Korean news agency, cited a police representative who mentioned that the police agency sent a letter to Interpol’s General Secretariat. Additionally, the Ministry of Justice is said to be separately seeking help from Interpol.

Following inquiries from the press, a police officer informed The Block that the team handling the Do Kwon case was engaged in “emergency meetings.” As of now, the Ministry of Justice has not provided any comments on the matter.

Earlier this month, a Montenegrin court annulled Do Kwon‘s extradition order to the U.S. This decision came after his defense attorneys filed an appeal, arguing that the extradition request was based on misinformation regarding the sequence of extradition requests from the U.S. and South Korea.

Do Kwon, the former leader of Terraform Labs, faces fraud charges from both U.S. and South Korean authorities. The charges stem from the collapse of the Terra ecosystem in May 2022, which resulted in the loss of approximately $40 billion of investor wealth within a few days.

Do Kwon was arrested in Montenegro in March last year for allegedly using a fake passport in an attempt to leave the country. He was sentenced to four months in November.

Despite the allegations, Kwon has consistently denied any deliberate wrongdoing or fraud committed by him or Terraform Labs.
