Telegram CEO Pavel Durov Released from Custody After Facing Charges in France

Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of the messaging service Telegram, is released from detention after being charged by French authorities. Durov was under judicial control and prohibited from leaving France after his appearance in the court on August 28. It must be noted before he was released he paid a bail of five million euros ($5. 5 million).

It was reported on Bloomberg that for connection with Telegram, Durov faced multiple criminal charges from the French side. The assertion’s include such things as engaging in the commission of an unlawful act, failure to communicate with the authorities, money laundering, being in association with criminals, and solemnly providing cryptology services without prior notification. Especially among Durov’s fans, who believe that the charges are an attempt to undermine freedom of speech, such accusations have caused a great stir.

Durov appeared in an extensively viewed video from Russian state-controlled news agency RIA Novosti in which he is depicted leaving the Paris court on August 28 unarmed. His release came shortly after his arrest from August 24 at a French airport north of Paris after he was detained in connection to a court inquiry that began in July. Even though the inquiry was “against person unnamed”, Durov was subsequently prosecuted in connection to the crime all the same.

As per French’s authorities Durov was active in propagation of child pornography through Telegram, thus compromising to facilitating of unlawful act. The latest legal issues referring to Durov are connected with child abuse in Switzerland, which does not seem to be related to the matters of telegram in any way.

It has raised concerns on what could happen to other internet leaders that are Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk due to the litigation risks concerning the actions of users on their site. With roughly 900 million monthly active users up to 2024, the case of Telegram takes significant place in the broader context of social networks accountabilities and regulation.
