US lawmakers demanded the immediate release of Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan, the Binance executive accused locally of illegal trading profits, in a Nigerian prison in February after visiting him. Rep. French Hill (R-Ark.) and Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (D-Pa.) stated that they visited Gambaryan this week and that he had malaria and pneumonia.
Gambaryan worked as a special agent at the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for 10 years and focused on combating money laundering and tax evasion.
“Tigran should be released immediately on a humanitarian release, the remaining charges dropped, and he should return to America where he belongs,” Hill said. Houlahan also stated that Gambaryan was facing “difficult conditions” and that his health condition was not very good.
Other MPs also called for Gambaryan’s release. Earlier this month, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) and 15 other lawmakers demanded immediate action to bring Gambaryan back in a letter to President Joe Biden.
“Mr. Gambaryan’s health and well-being are at risk and we fear for his life. Immediate action is essential to ensure his safety and protect his life. We must act quickly before it is too late,” the letter said.
These developments draw attention to Gambaryan’s situation, increasing efforts to create international pressure for his release.
