Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin continues to make headlines, not just for blockchain innovations but also for his philanthropic contributions. Most recently, he became the “adoptive father” of Moo Deng, a pygmy hippopotamus and an internet sensation residing in Thailand’s Khao Kheow Open Zoo.
A Generous Donation of 10 Million Baht for Moo Deng
On December 26, Khao Kheow Open Zoo announced on social media that Buterin had joined its Wildlife Sponsorship Program, donating 10 million Thai Baht (approximately $292,000) to support Moo Deng and its family. The post read:
“Thank you to Vitalik Buterin for joining the Wildlife Sponsorship Program by adopting Moo Deng and making a generous donation to its family! We look forward to collaborating over the next two years.”
Moo Deng gained widespread attention in September 2024 through adorable and heartfelt social media videos shared by the zoo. Its clips captivated audiences worldwide, transforming the pygmy hippo into a global internet star.
Buterin Hints at More Support
In a December 26 social media post, Buterin confirmed his donation and hinted at the possibility of offering additional support:
“I’m delighted to contribute to Moo Deng’s growth as its adoptive father over the next two years. With my donation of 10 million THB, I’ll continue to support this cause, and perhaps even more, as I’ve allocated 88 ETH for Moo Deng and its friends.”
Inspiring Future Philanthropy
This act of generosity is expected to bring greater attention to wildlife sponsorship programs and other charitable initiatives. Buterin’s involvement highlights the role of influential figures in supporting causes that extend beyond their primary domains.
