Vitalik Buterin Proposes New Metrics to Measure Ethereum Alignment

Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum

Vitalik Buterin, a co-founder of Ethereum, has suggested creating a set of criteria to evaluate how well different initiatives complement Ethereum’s basic goals. In his Sept. 28 blog post, Buterin noted that, given the varied spectrum of contributors—client teams, developers, researchers, and local communities—achieving “Ethereum alignment” presents a major obstacle for the ecosystem.

Buterin underlined the significance of making sure these initiatives support one Ethereum environment instead of creating “138 incompatible fiefdoms.” He said that one beginning point for gauging alignment may be the openness of a project, letting code be examined for security and so lowering the possibility of proprietary lock-in.

Additional possible benchmarks include security, decentralization, and interoperability. Buterin suggested two particular tests for gauging decentralization: the “walkaway” test (about whether a project might survive if the team vanishes) and the “insider attack” test (about the kind of damage the team could cause should they go hostile).

Projects could also be assessed depending on how they affect the Ethereum community and more general humanity, for enhancing public financing sources or financial inclusivity. Buterin underlined the need of keeping Ethereum’s neutrality and cautioned about political affiliations possibly impeding long-term expansion.

The creator of Cardano, Charles Hoskinson, has said Ethereum might rely too much on Buterin’s leadership. Many look to him for the road map and future direction of Ethereum, therefore he questioned the ecosystem’s capacity to advance without Buterin’s direction.
