Worldcoin Faces Legal Action in Colombia Over Data Laws

Worldcoin

The top consumer protection watchdog in Colombia has charged the biometric cryptocurrency project Worldcoin and its business Tools for Humanity with allegedly breaching the national data protection laws.

Colombia’s Superintendence of Industry and Commerce (SIC) said in a Wednesday statement, “The aim of the procedures is to ascertain whether the parties under investigation have infringed the Colombian personal data protection regime in the collection of sensitive personal data.”

Should one be found guilty, the SIC might impose fines or penalties that would stop Worldcoin’s activities for six months, or possibly an “immediate and definitive closure” of operations involving sensitive data.

Originally started by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, the initiative distributes “World IDs” to those who scan their irises on an Orb device as evidence of personhood. Those that register receive WLD tokens, which are cryptocurrencies. According to its website, Worldcoin has onboarded over 6.5 million people globally.

Originally introduced in Colombia in June this year, Worldcoin now runs Orb devices in 25 sites spread over seven cities, including Bogota, the capital.

Regulatory authorities in several different countries have closely examined this kind of gathering of human iris data. While Worldcoin let users control their iris data in March, Hong Kong started to forbid business there.
